I opened a deposit account with them earlier this year as a precursor to applying for the card, as it’s an easier process if you also have a banking relationship. What counts as travel with the Chase Sapphire Preferred?

• Chase Sapphire Preferred credit cards are issued by JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. Member FDIC.

This may include sightseeing activities, in-flight goods and services, purchases from gas stations, and tourist attractions. Unfortunately, there’s little you can do to try and convince Chase to change how it codes any of its purchase categories. You just have to make note when it happens so you know for the future if you’re trying to get the most rewards for your purchases. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is one of the best travel credit cards available. With its valuable benefits and easily navigable rewards structure, it appeals to a wide range of consumers.

What is the Chase 5 24 rule?

My theory is that the highest SLs are often on AF travel cards, in particular the higher AF travel cards. They like to give them generous credit limits to keep them happy, and keep those AFs coming in. So some of my “high limits” strategy has revolved around those types of cards, as long as I find them useful. The base earnings rate is 1.5 points (worth 1.5% cash back.)  Not great but still pretty mainstream compared to many lenders.

The Chase Freedom Unlimited credit limit is $500 or more for everyone who’s approved. The most creditworthy applicants can also get starting credit limits of $5,000 or higher from the Visa Signature version of the Chase Freedom Unlimited card. In general, you could get approved for a credit card with a $20,000 limit if you have excellent credit, a lot of income, and very little debt.

If you don’t travel enough or take advantage of the card’s statement credits and perks, you may not get enough value out of your card to offset a $795 annual fee. For many, the $95 annual fee on the Chase Sapphire Preferred may be the more reasonable option. My Sapphire Preferred has a $9,000 credit limit, which gives me plenty of room for whatever I need to buy. Fortunately, thanks to my Sapphire Preferred, I’m still able to earn Ultimate Rewards points when my Freedom cards aren’t an option. I’m not forced to switch to my cards from another issuer like American Express. I opened it in mid-2024 during the (no longer available) limited-time offer Chase had for the card. Additionally, paying off your balance in full each month is best to avoid interest charges that ultimately reduce your spending power. While Chase doesn’t require a minimum income, the bank will verify you can afford your monthly payments. It is also likely to assign a lower spending limit if you have a smaller income or imperfect credit. Millionaires use credit cards like the Centurion® Card from American Express, the J.P. Morgan Reserve Credit Card, and The Platinum Card® from American Express.

How Hard to Get Chase Sapphire Preferred

I’d also prefer to stay in a rental versus a hotel if I’m vacationing with my dog. I’m a Hyatt loyalist, I still don’t have the Bilt card and my Sapphire Preferred has become one of my most used cards. If you like the idea of having both cards, you can try applying for both, as long as you haven’t applied for another Chase card too recently. If your credit score is good enough, you might be able to score an “unlimited credit card”—one without a preset spending limit. That’s not a free pass to go on a months-long shopping spree, of course, as these credit cards technically do have some limitations. Chase does not post information regarding how high of a credit limit its credit cards can have, though there have been reports of credit limits reaching over $10,000 and even $20,000. If you’re approved for the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you can expect to have a minimum credit limit of at least $5,000.

You can be eligible for automatic limit increases as your income rises and by having an on-time payment history that strengthens your credit history. Chase may automatically increase your credit limit every six to 12 months if you’re a borrower in good standing. Whether or not Chase will automatically increase your credit line depends on several factors, including your credit score, account history and credit utilization.
